Brazilian Soccer Legend Mário Zagallo Dead at 92: ‘Giant Idol’

Mário Zagallo, four-time World Cup champion, has died at the age of 92.

The Brazilian football icon’s official Instagram account announced his death on Friday, along with details of his public wake and burial.

Zagallo died on January 5 in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro of multiple organ failure, according to a medical report he received The Washington Post.

“It is with great regret that we announce that our eternal world champion Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo has passed away,” reads an Instagram message in Spanish. “A devoted father, a loving grandfather, a caring father-in-law, a loyal friend, a winning professional and a great human being. A giant idol. A patriot who leaves us a legacy of great achievements.”

Zagallo won two World Cups as a player in 1958 and 1962. As head coach in 1970, he won his third World Cup victory. Twenty-four years later, as an assistant coach in 1994, he won the fourth trophy.

A statement on Instagram revealed that Zagall’s public apology will be held at the headquarters of the Brazilian Football Confederation on January 7 at 9:30am, followed by his burial at the São João Batista Cemetery at 4pm local time.

“I just want to thank everyone who has contributed in any way to my recovery,” he continued. “Special thanks to my doctor, Dr. Marcia Ladeira, and her semi-intensive nursing team! We are still stronger than ever! Thank you all for the messages and love!”
