Facts About Julie Rikelman
Julie Rikelman was born in 1972 in Kyiv, Ukraine. Her family fled to the United States when she was six years old after experiencing persecution in the former Soviet Union owing to her Jewish origin. They moved to Brookline, Massachusetts in 1979, without speaking English. Rikelman’s parents arrived with minimal resources and no guaranteed employment, relying on government help and non-profit organizations to make ends meet.
Rikelman acquired English as a second language and credits her interest in civil rights to witnessing her family’s struggle. In 1993 and 1997, she received her bachelor’s degree, magna cum laude, and her law degree, cum laude, from Harvard.
Legal Knowledge
Following law school, Rikelman clerked for two appeal judges: Justice Dana Fabe, Alaska’s first female justice, and Judge Morton I. Greenberg, a Reagan appointment on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. She was a Blackmun Fellow at the Centre for Reproductive Rights from 1999 to 2001. Justice Blackmun, the fellowship’s namesake, was a Nixon appointee who wrote the majority judgment in Roe v. Wade. Rikelman assisted in the litigation of multiple reproductive rights issues around the country during her two-year fellowship, including serving as lead counsel in two federal district court matters and second-chairing a one-week trial in state court.
Rikelman worked in private practice in various roles from 2001 to 2011. She began her legal career as an Associate at Feldman & Orlansky in Anchorage, Alaska, where she handled a variety of civil and criminal cases and appeals in state and federal courts. Rikelman’s practice included everything from commercial breach of contract to gerrymandering and medical misconduct. In 2004, she relocated to the East Coast, where she worked as a Senior Associate in Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP’s New York office on difficult commercial issues.
Rikelman often represented huge corporations there, notably JPMorgan Chase Bank in multi-party securities fraud action. She joined NBC Universal as in-house litigation counsel in 2006, where she acted as lead counsel in issues involving defamation, intellectual property, breach of contract, and the First Amendment. During her final year at NBC Universal, Rikelman was elevated to Vice President of Litigation.
Rikelman rejoined the Centre for Reproductive Rights as a senior staff attorney in 2011, and the following year was promoted to U.S. Litigation Director. In this capacity, Rikelman has battled high-profile reproductive rights issues on behalf of healthcare providers and other organizations around the country, in addition to overseeing the Center’s overall U.S. litigation strategy and supervising junior attorneys.
Awards and Serving
Rikelman has received numerous awards for her public interest work during her career, including the American Association of Justice (AAJ) Leonard Weinglass in Defence of Civil Liberties Award in 2022. In addition to her work at the Centre for Reproductive Rights, a nonprofit organization, she often represented clients pro gratis while in private practice, winning the National Law Journal Pro at no cost Award in 2004.
