Fady Dagher Wikipedia, Daughter, Origin, Salarie, Familie – The new police chief of Montreal, Fady Dagher, was sworn in on Thursday. He stressed the need of officers to be aware of the problems people confront, including mental illness and precarious housing, as well as the realities of their neighbourhood. “The populace must also comprehend the challenge and reality of policing in 2023,” he stated.

Following occurrences like the police shooting of George Floyd in the US, the public has lost faith in the police, and now, according to him, police must reestablish relationships with the populace while addressing racial profiling.

“Racial profiling is not just a police problem,” he declared. “Discrimination in all its forms is a problem for society as a whole and only a small piece of a larger puzzle.”

Dagher, who is the first person of colour to hold the office of Montreal police chief, was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, to Lebanese parents. He expressed his immense pride in holding this position.

“Why not, if by holding this position I can encourage young people to believe in themselves? I’m so proud of it,” he remarked. In a ceremony at Marché Bonsecours, Dagher took the oath in the presence of Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante, who expressed her confidence in his experience, knowledge, and leadership.

She said that because of his vast expertise, the SPVM police force will be better able to address issues like the growth in gun and juvenile crime. After the event, Plante posted on Twitter, “He will continue the work, with our police force, to implement our Montreal model of urban security.” I have complete faith in him to complete this duty.

A history of 25 years with SPVM

Dagher has been with the SPVM for 25 years, but he just recently gained local notoriety for his work as the police chief in Longueuil, Quebec, where he introduced a community policing model that caught the eye of the provincial government and police services around the nation.

He had previously advanced to the position of assistant chief in Montreal. Then, in 2015, he was one of the candidates for the chief role, but Philippe Pichet was chosen. of 2017, Dagher was appointed police chief of Longueuil.

Geneviève Guilbault, the minister of public security for Quebec, described Dagher’s approach to community policing in Longueuil as avant-garde in June 2021 and expressed optimism that other cities would follow suit as she announced a significant provincial investment in the initiative.

RÉSO was the name of Dagher’s project, which debuted in 2019 as a pilot project. Its objective was to place particular officers in particular neighbourhoods so that they could get to know them well enough to recommend other services to vulnerable populations before things become criminal.

In the meantime, the leadership of the SPVM had changed frequently. Martin Prudhomme, head of the Sûreté du Québec, briefly took over for Pichet after he was placed on administrative leave in 2017.

Sylvain Caron then took over in 2018 and ruled for four years until departing in March for personal reasons. As the city started the selection process for a new chief for the force, Sophie Roy has been acting in that capacity since last spring.

To choose the new leader, a committee of choice was established. Three senior civil officers and three duly elected local representatives made up the group.

Encourages People to join Police force

Fady Dagher is the SPVM’s 42nd chief, leading a force of about 4,400 police officers. One of Dagher’s major concerns, he stated, will be addressing the issue of armed violence in Montreal. On the island, he claimed, there are an excessive number of illegal firearms, and “we’ll go get them one by one if we have to.”

“But don’t forget about other kinds of violence — conjugal, cybercrime, also daily violence that has repercussions — and road safety [that] creates drama that could be avoided and hurts both victims and those responsible.”

He claimed that although there is a tremendous lot of work to be done, success is feasible with time and patience. Dagher urged young people from all walks of life in Quebec to think about joining the police force and urged those enrolled in the province’s police school to travel to Montreal to complete their studies.

The SPVM has had trouble adding new officers, and their overall strength has been dwindling. According to the police union, there are 45 fewer officers on Montreal’s streets this month than there were a year ago.

According to Dagher, living costs are higher in cities, and job is harder, more complicated, and subject to more media criticism.
