Breaking Bad Cast on Lack of F-Bombs on the Show — and How There Could’ve Been More

Back to Albuquerque!

Breaking Bad cast members Dean Norris, RJ Mitte, Daniel and Luis Moncada, Steven Michael Quezada and Raymond Cruz reunited Sunday at Awesome Con in Washington, DC

In a conversation moderated by PEOPLE’s Dory Jackson, the group reflected on their time working on the acclaimed AMC series. Touching on some of the behind-the-scenes stuff, the stars talked about AMC’s one F-bomb per season rule — and how often they tried to slip in a word during filming despite it.

“Every freaking day,” Norris, 60, said.

“We heard that and we got upset,” Cruz, 62, said of the rule before joking, “And Dean used them all in one line. So they took that rule down real quick. That rule changed real quick .”

Offering further insight into the rule, Mitte, 31, noted that they would have to pay an additional fee to AMC to use an expletive more than once.

Breaking Bad ran on AMC from 2008 to 2013 for five seasons. The series followed a troubled high school chemistry teacher who became the head of the local meth trade.

Bryan Cranston played the main character Walter White. Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks and Betsy Brandt are also among the notable actors of the series.

Ahead of the Awesome Con panel on the show on Sunday, many Breaking Bad cast members reunited for an F-bomb-laden appearance at the 2024 SAG Awards. The stars made the audience laugh together as they presented tonight’s award for Best Ensemble in a Drama Television Series.

Reflecting on the series as a whole at Awesome Con on Sunday, the cast shared with attendees why they thought Breaking Bad resonates with viewers.

“With despair in hard times, Breaking Bad came out. And I think the reason it resonated, why people hated him and loved him, is because a lot of people were struggling just like Walter White,” Mitte explained. “Not knowing where to turn or what to do and they had to take drastic measures. Not all of them were drug dealers, but [they had to get a] other work, other things. … It’s something everyone can relate to.”

As for the future Breaking Bad franchise, which already includes the original series in addition to the spinoff Better call Saul and in 2019 El Camino: The Movie Latelythe group pondered whether there could be more.

“What I understand, that’s what I think [creator] Vince [Gilligan] really wants to be able to let go Breaking Bad have their own [moment]. Don’t mess with good things,” Mitte said.”Better call Saul it was great. El Camino it was great. But Breaking Bad it was something that was truly incredible. And I really feel that the legacy of that is something that we can let go on for a long time.”

Quezada, 61, added: “I think it would be cool for the fans [to have another spinoff]. But I think for Vince’s vision and art, [he is] probably meant I could create something else.”

“That’s the thing with artists. We’re always thinking about what’s our next challenge. What’s going to be our next creation? And sometimes it’s easy to go back to something we’ve done,” he concluded. “But the hard part is actually trying to know what we’re going to create moving forward. Again, I can’t speak for the production and Vince Gilligan and his writing staff. But certainly, I think sometimes when you do it well, it’s okay to go and do it something else.”
