Brecken Merrill news

On the set of Yellowstone, Brecken Merrill asked Kevin Costner a question that would change the course of his life forever.

The aspiring actor tells ET that while cameras were set for the dramatic river scene in season one’s “The Long Black Train,” he was very cold between takes. Tate Dutton, played by Merrill, and his grandfather John Dutton, played by Costner, were forced to team up when they learned how to build a campfire for the script. Tate had to go further into the field to get bigger branches that would actually start a fire.

Although it was very cold that day, the scene required Tate to reach out with a branch before falling into the icy river. Merrill, who was just 9 years old at the time, remembers having 20 hand warmers in his pocket before and between takes, but the heat packs were ineffective. Merrill, 14, also remembers Costner turning to him and asking a question that would spark a months-long period of introspection as he miserably rubbed his hands together.

“Do you really want to do this?” Kevin asks. Do you really want to do this?” In a phone conversation with ET, Merrill explains. “I thought about it for the next month, and it led me to the conclusion that yes, this is what I want to do. That is my profession. My passion is this. It is very cold. Despite the cold, I enjoy it. I wish I was here. I just want to thank you, Kevin. I feel very lucky to work with such a talented cast.

In what has become one of the most popular shows on television, Merrill, then 8 years old, was cast as Costner’s on-screen grandson. Although Merrill Phillips’ parents, Jesse and Kristy Phillips, had no idea that Yellowstone would lead to prequels and sequels in Taylor Sheridan’s so-called universe, they were aware of how significant the achievement was and wanted to capture their joyous reaction to the wonderful news on camera. So they came up with a hoax.
