Breel Embolo was born on February 14, 1997 in Yaoundé, the capital city of Cameroon. When he was young, his parents separated, and when he was five or six years old, his mother moved to France to study. She met her future husband, a Swiss citizen, while there. The family moved to Basel the following year. On December 12, 2014, he became a Swiss citizen. His girlfriend Naomi gave birth to daughter Naliya in June 2018.
In 2013, he joined Basel, a team in the Swiss Super League. It was his first time playing professional football. During his 3 years at Basel, he played 91 matches and scored 31 goals.
