Brendan Whitworth, the chief executive of Anheuser-Busch, finally spoke out Friday after the backlash against transgender people sparked by a partnership between Bud Light and TikTok celebrity Dylan Mulvaney.
Whitworth said in a statement that he wants every person who drinks Bud Light to be proud of the company’s beer. “As the CEO of a company founded in the American heartland more than 165 years ago, I am responsible for making sure that all consumers are proud of the beer we make,” said Whitworth. Whitworth, however, never directly addressed Bud Light, the company’s connection to Mulvaney, or the resulting controversy with anti-transgender protesters.
“We never intended to engage in a discussion that divides people. We are in the business of fostering relationships between people over beer,” the statement read.
Mulvaney, a 21-year-old trans woman and influencer, drank Bud Light from a beer can with her face on it in an Instagram video she shared on April 1 with her nearly 2 million followers. She promoted the March Madness job contest in a video, using the hashtag #budlightpartner in the caption. Many supporters of the anti-transgender beer have expressed outrage over the commercial and Mulvaney’s involvement, including singer Kid Rock.
