Bret Baier began his television career with a local station in Rockford, Illinois before moving to WRAL-TV in Raleigh, North Carolina, then a CBS affiliate and now a NBC affiliate (as of the February 29, 2016). In 1998, he submitted an audition tape to Fox News and was hired as the network’s Atlanta bureau chief.
On September 11, 2001, he drove from Georgia, Virginia to Arlington, Virginia to cover the attack on the Pentagon. Bret never returned to the Atlanta office and was hired as the network’s Pentagon correspondent, a position he held for five years and in which he traveled to Afghanistan for 11 years.
Similarly, he joined Fox News as a White House correspondent in 2007, covering the George W. Bush administration. In 2007, Bret began to replace Brit Hume, then head of the Special Report.
