Bret Michaels Shares Update on ‘Free Spirit’ Rescue Dog Bret Jr.: He’s a ‘Bit of an Outlaw’

Bret Michaels loves life with his rescue dog, Bret Michaels Jr.!

Last month, the rocker — who is currently on his Parti-Gras tour — adopted a 6-year-old Husky named after him who gave life-saving blood to a kitten battling flea anemia at the Humane Society of Nebraska.

Now, Michaels, 60, said in a post shared on Instagram this week that Bret Jr. just like him – “a wild free spirit” and “a bit of an outlaw who doesn’t listen very well.”

While welcoming all “his friends” at Irondog K9 International Inc., the Poison rocker continued about his canine pal: “He’s getting used to it, he’s healthy and he’s such a good dog.”

“… There just aren’t enough words to say how happy I am,” Michaels added. “I can’t stop laughing. He’s going to live an amazing, amazing life.”

Bret Michaels Adopts Dog Named After Him After Donating Life-Saving Blood To Kitten (Exclusive)

Last month, the Nebraska Humane Society shared a Facebook post detailing the story of Bret Jr.’s lifesaving blood donation to a kitten in need.

In its post, the facility described the kitten as being brought in as a stray along with two other cats.

Noting that they were “dirty, frostbitten and covered in fleas,” the Nebraska Humane Society wrote that they took care of the animals, but noted that one of the cats appeared “slightly disturbed” and was “wobbly, weak and lethargic.”

After the kitten was diagnosed with flea anemia, the group discovered that a blood transfusion needed to be done quickly, but they couldn’t wait for testing to be done to determine a suitable feline donor.

Instead, the organization knew that a dog’s blood could be transfused into a cat’s blood, and they remembered that Bret Michaels the dog had had his blood work done just days before, making him a candidate for donation.

After the first round of transfusions, the kitten began to show signs of improvement, the Nebraska Humane Society said in a Facebook post.

At the end, there is talk about Bret Jr. back to Michaels, and he reached out to the Nebraska Humane Society to adopt a dog named after him.

“I couldn’t be more touched and honored to adopt Bret Michaels’ husky, knowing that he gave blood to save the kitten’s life,” he previously told PEOPLE. “I couldn’t work fast enough to adopt this husky and extend little Bret Jr.’s incredible quality of life.”

Michaels’ decision to adopt the hero dog came shortly after he lost his 14-year-old German shepherd, Phoenix, earlier this year.

“So this story brought a smile back into my family’s life,” the musician told PEOPLE. “I work diligently with my family and many people to save and improve the lives of many pets.”

“We have always donated to amazing pet drives and charities and will continue to do so [home] Bret Jr., who … has now found a loving family that includes our two rescue shepherds, Nova and Draco,” he added.
