Jessica Biel To Publish Kids Book About Periods: ‘We Need To Normalize the Discussion’ (Exclusive)

Jessica Biel is ready to teach young people that periods should not be ashamed 7. heaven star announced exclusively to PEOPLE that she is publishing her debut children’s book. Children’s book about periods will be published by A Kids Co. this spring and is a new addition to Penguin Random House DK’s “A Kids Book About” series. The book aims to de-stigmatize the topic of menstruation for young readers.”People don’t talk about periods enough,” Biel tells PEOPLE. “I’ve always felt strongly that we need to normalize the discussion about periods, and as a parent, writing this book felt like an organic way to include children in the conversation from the very beginning.”

Biel wrote, according to a statement shared with PEOPLE Children’s book about periods as a way to start “important conversations” about periods and the human body with a new generation. The intention of the book is to teach children and encourage them to talk about the normality of menstruation, as well as in general about the changes that come with growing up. The book was created in collaboration with PERIOD., a non-profit organization that strives to end the “month of poverty and stigma” through education and advocacy. Five percent of the proceeds from each book sold will go to PERIOD.

Children’s book about periods It’s not the first time Biel has openly talked about menstruation. In an Instagram video dated March 5, the actress reflected on the moment she got her first period, before she was scheduled to perform in a school play. “I was so scared,” she recalled. “I locked myself in the bathroom. Crying hysterically, I called my mom. I told her, you know, ‘something’s wrong.’ That’s what I felt, I felt something was wrong with me. Even though she prepared me, I wasn’t ready.”
