Brian Cox Says the Outcome of the Succession Series 4 Finale Was ‘Obvious’

Brian Cox reflects on Successionfinals.

The actor (77), who played the role of Logan Roy in the drama, revealed on Succession post-Emmy panel moderated by Seth Meyers on Tuesday that it’s “obvious” that the Season 4 finale will be the show’s final episode.

While actors Matthew Macfadyen and Kieran Culkin said they only realized it at the dinner table, Cox said it dawned on him much earlier.

“We didn’t know 100 percent,” Macfadyen, 49, said in an interview.

“I don’t understand what you didn’t know,” Cox joked. “I’m fucking dead or something. Christ, it was so fucking obvious.”

“We’re going to finish and I’m like, ‘Oh, we didn’t know,'” Cox added. “We went to the last read and we thought, ‘Oh, maybe there’s still life.'”

“That’s funny,” Cox said playfully.

SuccessionIn the 90-minute series finale, which aired in May 2023, the Roy family made one last play for control of his Waystar Royco media empire in the days following Logan’s death. However, the company was eventually bought by competitor GoJo.

“We rewrite and rewrite until the end [and we thought] so we could leave that escape door,” screenwriter Jesse Armstrong said at a panel held at LA’s Paramount Theatre.

“And maybe it was psychological, because it was really, really hard to finish it,” Armstrong, 53, added.

“It was like, ‘We need an escape,’ almost to commit to the end,” he continued.

Armstrong also found that hinting to actors that there was a possibility of more episodes may have improved their performance.

“Not to feel like this is a done deal that there are no more options,” he added.

The series was first at the 2023 Emmy Awards with 27 nominations and six wins, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Culkin, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Sarah Snook, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Macfadyen.

While accepting the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Macfadyen gave “special recognition” to his “on-screen wife, Sarah Snook, and my other on-screen husband, Nicholas Braun.”

“Acting with you was one of the best things in my career. Thank you, Nick. Thank you, sir. It was a pleasure,” he added.

He also thanked his “real life wife” Keeley Hawes, sweetly calling her “my love and best friend”.
