Brian Mendoza News
Sebastian Fundora, nicknamed “The Towering Inferno,” lost his fight on Saturday when Brian Mendoza stunned him with a dramatic seventh-round knockout victory.
The 11-1 underdog Mendoza unexpectedly fell like lightning into a bottle when he caught and dropped Fundora with a hard left hook after having little success in the first six rounds. Mendoza followed up by connecting with a right and left hook after a surprised Fundora went down temporarily.
As referee Ray Corona counted to 10, Fundora collapsed to the ground and was unable to get up. While a jubilant Mendoza knelt down and pounded the canvas with enthusiasm, a disgruntled Fundora shook her head in disappointment. After 39 seconds of the fight, it was decided to stop the seventh round.
In the Showtime Night Premier Boxing Champions main event at Dignity Health Sports Park, Mendoza (22-2, 16 KOs) won the WBC interim title. “I started losing a few rounds, but I didn’t care because I would never give up,” Mendoza said. “If I had had some losses years ago, I would have quit my job.
I persisted in combat, but look at me now. I was a swing match after the main event a year ago. It didn’t matter who I was or what I was doing. This is a test. If you keep working, you’ll make it, honey.
Until the knockout, Fundora, a resident of neighboring Coachella, California who is 6-foot-6 with a 10-inch reach advantage, effectively used his massive frame to outbox and neutralize Mendoza. Fundora has an overall record of 20-1-1 with 13 knockouts.
Until the 29-year-old Mendoza regained his will, Fundora was throwing left hooks at will. After submitting and forcing former unified 154-pound champion Jeison Rosario to retire in November, Mendoza, trained by Ismael Salas, was on top of the fight. Against Fundora, Mendoza used the same charm and charisma.
According to CompuBox, Fundora was ahead on all three scoreboards with scores of 60-54, 60-54 and 59-54 going into the seventh round. He also had a 100-to-59 advantage in total shots and a 75-to-53 advantage in power shots.
“I said I’m not just a good hitter, folks. In those rounds where he caught me, I was a heavy puncher, Mendoza said. He paused, but when I noticed that he was helpless, I knew he had to go in for the kill because he wasn’t going to stop coming either.
