Bride Throws Tantrum After Her Brother’s Friends Buy Her ‘Cheap’ Wedding Gift Totaling $500

The bride is angry with her 19-year-old brother and his student friends for buying her a “cheap” wedding gift.

According to the bride’s brother, who shared the situation on Reddit “Am I A——?” subreddit, his group of friends — all invited to the wedding — collectively presented his sister with silverware worth a total of about $200, along with an additional $300 in cash. However, after opening the gift, the bride expressed her dissatisfaction.

“My sister is now ranting about how cheap my friends are and how the silverware wasn’t even that expensive and how they should be ashamed for being so cheap and that when you are invited to a wedding you should give a great expensive gift because being cheap is disrespectful to the couple who invited you to his wedding,” the brother wrote in his post.

The OP explained that most of his friends are students, either unemployed or working part-time, and have pooled their resources to contribute what they can.

“I told her that in this scenario she has no right to a nice or expensive gift,” the brother continued. “She knew my group of friends consisted of broke students so she had no right to expect much.”

He also added that his parents and sister’s husband now call him “a——” because he didn’t call out his friends for not knowing wedding etiquette.

Since sharing the dilemma online, the brother has received feedback from other Reddit users on how he handled the situation. One person suggested that the bride may have just invited her brother’s friends expecting to receive gifts.

“Your sister is really a bit of a fool. Your friends were generous, especially considering their student status. In this culture, expensive wedding gifts are not the price of attendance; an invitation is supposed to be a sign of friendship, not greed,” the Redditor wrote. Apparently your sister has her own, unique motives.”

Another user chimed in with a similar view: “You’re all in college with only about 0 income. I wouldn’t expect anything but a nice card!”
