News about Bridget Rooney

Nine members of a traveling family that kept their employees in precarious conditions in trailers have been jailed for crimes related to modern slavery.

A victim had to dig his own grave after enduring more than 25 years of suffering. Martin Rooney Senior, the family patriarch, was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while his two sons received sentences of more than 15 years. The traveling family is “cold in its cruelty,” as one author described them.

One of the largest such investigations, Lincolnshire Police Operation Ceramic, involved a case at Nottingham Crown Court.

At Drinsey Nook in Lincolnshire, the Rooneys’ victims were beaten and denied access to running water or toilets. Sentencing Martin Rooney Senior, Timothy Spencer QC, said: “You have raised your children in a criminal culture.”

The judge also contrasted the poor circumstances of the victims with the wealthy lifestyle the family led. He explained that it was comparable to the gap between medieval royalty and peasants.

The victims will never get back the years that were taken from them, but Deputy Chris Davison of Lincolnshire Police said: “I hope this gives them some reassurance that justice has been served and shows that we will do everything in our power to our power to try and prevent others from suffering as they suffered”. Davison said the force “will not be confident of this result” as there could be more victims of modern slavery in the UK.

We are investigating five ongoing investigations and will continue to put all victims at the center of our investigations, he continued. Seven arrest warrants were executed in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire in September 2014, prompting police to launch operations against members of the Rooney family.

Numerous victims were discovered and the British Human Trafficking Center concluded that 18 men were brought to the sites illegally.

All of the victims, who ranged in age from 18 to 63 and were often homeless, were characterized as weaklings who were collected by the defendants from across the UK.
