Due to the injuries sustained during the incident, the 42-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of murder is in police custody in the hospital.

Avon and Somerset Police today confirmed that the victims are a ten-month-old boy, a three-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy.

The names have not been released and a post-mortem will be carried out in due course following the “deeply disturbing” discovery, police said.

The triple tragedy is believed to be an “isolated incident” with “no further risk to the wider community”.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct was notified because there was “previous police contact earlier this month”.

A spokesman said: “We have requested a paper referral with additional information about the previous contact and once we receive it we will assess it to determine if further action is required from us.”

The death of such young children is a great shock to the whole community and this incident has had a deep and profound impact on all of us in the police force.

Neighbors said the two eldest children attended the local Sea Mills Primary School, which was closed this morning.

The school said: “Due to today’s tragic events in our community, playroom will be canceled tomorrow morning.

“Our hearts go out to the family and their friends, neighbours, school friends and the wider community.”

The police did not reveal the relationship between the suspect and the children.

Today, a forensic tent could be seen in the garden of the home near the trampoline and other children’s playgrounds.

Chief Inspector Vicks Hayward-Melen said: “Uniformed officers from the neighborhood policing team will be in the area over the coming days to provide safety and support to the local community, so please get in touch if you have any concerns or concerns.

“It is important to emphasize that we are treating this as an isolated incident and do not believe there is any ongoing risk to the wider community.

“We have been humbled by the community’s response to this tragedy.

“The death of such young children is a huge shock to the whole community and this incident has had a deep and profound impact on all of us in the police force.

“I know people will be anxious for answers, but the large investigative team is in the very early stages of a highly sensitive, complex and thorough investigation and it will take time to establish all the facts.

“We anticipate having to carry out further investigations at the scene by the end of the week and cordons will be in place while we do so.”
