But a freak fall during the celebration led to the 29-year-old severing a carotid artery in his neck, causing him to bleed heavily.

Desperate friends and family rushed to try to save Liam, but he was pronounced dead before emergency services arrived.

The exact cause of his fatal neck injury and the exact location of the incident are not yet known.

The coroner’s report on the policeman’s death is expected in the coming days.

Liam took part in the BBC series Wanted Down Under, giving the teenager advice about life in Australia before they emigrated.

However, it appears that his scenes were never used.

He moved from the UK to Australia when he was still a teenager and later graduated from the Joondalup Police Academy.

The Brit then joined the Gang Squad and the Tactical Response Team, where he built his career as an exemplary officer.

In 2017, Liam moved to Kalgoorlie – about 370 miles east of Perth – where he became a prominent member of the community while playing for the local rugby team.

His colleagues in the WA Police Union remember him as an “outstanding officer” and a “valued member of the blue family”.

Police Commissioner Colonel Blanch, Western Australia’s police commissioner, said: “Every effort was made to try to save her, but it was not to be, and I know everyone involved is really hurt.

“I think they wish they could wake up from this nightmare.”

“This outstanding police officer loved helping the community and was a great example of WA policing and it’s a real tragedy,” Mr Blanch said.

“[He was] a very, very confident, capable young man with his whole life ahead of him, and that’s how sad this is.

– Now it is important for us to wrap ourselves around each other, to lean on each other.

Union president Paul Gale added: “Any time a police officer dies, no matter how, it really shakes the core of the police family.”

WA Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti described Liam’s death as a “horrible, horrible tragedy”.

She said: “I understand this officer came from the UK to start a new life in WA.

“My condolences to the family and friends of that particular officer.”

A police spokesman told The West Australian: “Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his family and colleagues.

“Our Department of Health, Social Care and Safety will provide support to those affected by this tragedy.”
