A BRITISH mother has been sentenced to death by hanging in India after she and her lover brutally murdered her husband as her horrified son watched.

British businessman Sukhjit bled to death at his mother’s home while on a month-long vacation with his family in the Indian capital, Delhi.

They drugged Sukhjit, hit him on the head with a hammer and cut his throat with a knife.

The only eyewitness to the horrific crime was the couple’s nine-year-old son, who testified against his mother in court.

The court heard how Ramandeep and her accomplice Gurpreet Singh were lovers.

Government lawyer Shree Pal Verma said as Ramandeep’s son testified, “He told the court that his mother and Gurpreet killed his father in his sleep in their home.”

“During the investigation, it came to light that the woman was in a relationship with Gurpreet and they were planning to kill Sukhjit.”

Verma explained that on the night of September 1, 2016, Ramandeep had mixed sedatives in the food, putting all the family members into a deep sleep.

She continued, “According to the police investigation, Gurpreet entered the house after Ramandeep opened the gate late at night.

“They hit Sukhjit on the head with a hammer and cut his throat.”

The couple’s young son, who had not eaten sedated food that night, awoke to the chaos and witnessed the horrific crime.

Verma said, “He was woken up by a noise in the room and saw his mother sitting on his father’s body and suffocating him with a pillow.

“Gurpreet hit (the child’s) father twice on the head with a hammer. As his father was still alive, Gurpreet took out a knife from his pocket. His mother took the knife from Gurpreet and cut his father’s throat.”

When asked why she committed the murder, Ramandeep said her husband was planning to sell his property and move to England, so his “family members killed him and misplaced her”.

Ramandeep’s family also believe she was “set up” and said they will “fight it to the end”.

Ramandeepa’s family claims she and her husband had a “loving marriage” and were “deeply in love” and had two “wonderful boys”.

A family source said: “The family are completely heartbroken and devastated by this. But their fight for justice continues. They will not give up.”

Ramandeep previously worked as a store manager at Argos in Derby and met Sukhjit while working as a driver in England.

Her lover, Gurpreet, was a native of Punjab and Sukhjit’s childhood friend.

Gurpreet regularly visited the couple’s home and reportedly befriended Ramandeep.

Sukhjit’s mother told reporters outside the court after the verdict: “I feel relieved. My prayers were answered and I got what I expected from the court.

“I sought the death penalty for Ramandeep so that no mother’s child would die like this.”

Despite the verdict, Ramandeep plans to appeal the sentence and maintains her innocence.

The judge said about the murder: “Not only one man died that day. The remaining years of an elderly widow were killed, the childhood and youth of two minor children were exterminated.
