Britney Spears’ Mom Lynne Is ‘Really Making an Effort’ After Spending Singer’s Birthday Together: Source (Exclusive)

Britney and Lynne Spears are working on mending their relationship.

Lynne, 68 — who attended the pop star’s 42nd birthday bash on Friday, along with Britney’s brother Bryan Spears — is “trying really hard to be in Britney’s life,” a source told PEOPLE exclusively.

The “Toxic” singer “is still hurt, because she feels like her mom could have done more to help her,” a source tells PEOPLE, “but she has very few friends and really just needs to be with her family.”

“Her mom loves her. There’s no doubt about that,” the insider, who also notes that “Britney can be very stubborn.”

The source also says Lynne is “profusely apologetic to Britney” and “takes full blame.”

“Lynne is really trying to be in Britney’s life. Britney loves spending time with her,” says the insider. They have a complicated relationship, but they both seem to need each other.

Lynne was spotted leaving Britney’s 42nd birthday party in Los Angeles on Saturday morning, apparently after a night out, according to photos obtained by TMZ.

After the “Circus” singer’s party on Friday, another source told PEOPLE that “being together and celebrating her birthday was a really nice moment for the family.”

The special Spears family moment comes months after Britney said she and Lynne are working to mend their broken relationship, revealing that her mom recently visited her house.

“My sweet mom showed up at my door yesterday after 3 years,” the singer wrote in an Instagram post in May. “It’s been such a long time … with family there are always things to work out … but time heals wounds!!!”

The woman in me the author continued: “After being able to communicate what I’ve been holding in for an extremely long time, I feel so blessed that we were able to try to make things right !!! I love you 💕 so much !!! Psss… I’m so blessed that we can have coffee together after 14 years!!! Let’s go shopping later!!!”

Last month, Britney shared a photo of Bryan dressed in a workman’s suit and construction hat and wrote: “My big brother who’s like a dad and my best friend !! Not sure what’s going on with this outfit though 😂😂😂🧐🙄 !! !”

Also in November, Britney’s younger sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, broke her silence about her relationship with the singer and said she’s looked up to her since they were kids.
