Britney Spears Says She Didn’t Write Her Memoir to ‘Offend’ Anyone: ‘It Has Given Me Closure’

Britney Spears is open about her decision to write her new memoir.

On Friday, the pop superstar — who will release her revealing book The woman in me next week — shared a heartfelt message with fans on social media about her intentions with the project.

“The purpose of my book is not to offend anyone in any way,” Spears (41) wrote in a note on Instagram and X, formerly Twitter.

“That was me then… that’s the past!!!”

The “Toxic” singer then wrote that most of the events she recounted in her memoir date back 20 years. “I’ve moved on and it’s still a beautiful clean slate,” she wrote. “I’m here to set it up like that for the rest of my life!!! Anyway, it’s the last one and s— it’s happening!!”

Spears continued, writing that she “didn’t know” The woman in me “should have been written,” but that it gave her “a conclusion of all things for a better future.”

“I hope I can enlighten people who in most cases feel especially lonely or hurt or misunderstood,” she explained. “Again, my motive for this book was not to repeat my past experiences…”

So far, even before Tuesday’s announcement, The woman in me has prompted revelations about the entertainer’s nearly 14-year conservatorship, early career as a teenager signed to a record deal, and past romances with Justin Timberlake and Colin Farrell.

Before it hits shelves, Spears spoke with PEOPLE The woman in me — from moments that were difficult to write about to how her life looks today, after she stopped being her conservator in 2021. As she explained via email, “it’s finally time for me to raise my voice and speak up, and my fans deserve to hear it directly from me.”

Spears also promised that writing the book would mean “no more conspiracies, no more lies – just me owning my past, present and future.”

“For the past 15 years or even the beginning of my career, I’ve sat while people talked about me and told my story for me,” Spears said. “After I got out of conservatorship, I was finally free to tell my story without repercussions from the people who were in charge of my life.”
