Brittany Cartwright Says 'Out with the Old, in with the New' as She Rocks Cutout Dress Before Divorce Filing

Brittany Cartwright is celebrating a new beginning!

On Tuesday, Aug. 27, Cartwright, 35, filed for divorce from Jax Taylor, 45, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, nearly six months after Vanderpump Rules the stars announced that they were “separating”.

In the days leading up to the filing, Cartwright suggested she was ready for a fresh start, taking to Instagram to share two photos of herself posing in a lime green dress with a cut-out chest.

The reality star wore her brown hair in a glam up ‘do style and looked confidently into the camera with her hand on her hip in the first shot, while looking away from the lens in the second. She added extra height to the look with a pair of bare strappy heels.

“Out with the old, in with the new. 💚,” Cartwright captioned the post.

Later on Tuesday, the day her divorce was announced, Cartwright was photographed wearing a tight blue maxi dress and heels. She wore her hair down in waves around her shoulders as she headed out to dinner in Los Angeles.

Cartwright and Taylor, who first met in Las Vegas in 2015 before tying the knot in 2019, have a three-year-old son together, Cruz. In her filing, Cartwright requested primary legal and physical custody of the toddler, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, although she asked for Taylor to be granted visitation rights.

Zvijezda Brava also asked the court to terminate spousal support for both parties.

After filing, a source exclusively told PEOPLE that the divorce was “something Brittany knew she had to do in the best interest of herself and her son.”

The insider added that Cartwright, who cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce, filed “to move forward and stop this tumultuous cycle they’ve been living in.”

“There’s a lot that’s happened in the past few months that she couldn’t ignore,” the source continued. “This decision was not made lightly, but she is confident it was the right one.”

The source said Taylor “feels mixed emotions” and “knows this was ultimately the right decision, but is sad that things ended up the way they did.”

A representative for the couple did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Tuesday.

Cartwright and Taylor’s relationship is documented at Vanderpump Rules and their spinoff Jax & Brittany Take Kentucky.

After taking a brief break from the cameras, the couple returned to TV to star in a new Bravo reality series Valley in March 2024.

Earlier this month, PEOPLE reported that Taylor checked himself out of the hospice center he checked into in late July. An insider said he plans to return for the second season of the movie Valley.

On ValleyAt the premiere in March, Cartwright told PEOPLE that even though she’s been Taylor’s “ride or die for nine years,” “there’s only so much a woman can take.”

“It’s hard, it’s hard, but we’re dealing with it the best we can,” Taylor said of the divorce at the time.
