Director of 1994's The Crow Pokes Fun at Remake's Poor Box Office: 'Not Much Cash to Grab It Seems'

Crow didn’t really take off.

The remake of the 1994 film opened in theaters on Friday, August 23rd, taking in $4.6 million in its opening weekend. According to Diversityits production budget was reportedly $50 million.

However, there is one director who is undeterred by the opening weekend results: Croworiginal director, Alex Proyas. Ever since the 2024 remake directed by Rupert Sanders was announced, Proyas has been vocal in his opposition to it.

Proyas, 60, confirmed the recent release of the new film on his Facebook page. “I thought the remake was a cynical money grab. There doesn’t seem to be much money up for grabs,” he wrote on Sunday, August 25.

Along with sharing his own posts, he also reposted several YouTube reviews of the film. One titled “The Crow – Worst Movie of the Year”, where he added: “The review we’ve all been waiting for. Now that’s a bit like flogging a dead horse so I think I’ll stop after this… until another funny one comes along! 😉. ”

“Maybe I can borrow my DCPs [Digital Cinema Package] to film schools for lectures on how NOT to make a movie?” he wrote in another post. Adding, “Cinema theaters sure won’t need them after next weekend. 😂.”

This is not the first time that Proyas has criticized a new film. After the trailer for the remake was released in March, he wrote in a now-deleted Facebook post that he “doesn’t enjoy seeing negativity about the work of any fellow filmmaker,” but that the film should not be a remake, according to IndieWire.

Crow it’s not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was completed as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. That is his legacy. It should stay that way.”

Bruce Lee’s son, Brandon Lee, played Eric Draven in the original 1994 film. He died after an accidental shooting on the set in 1993 at the age of 28. Bill Skarsgård has taken over the role of Draven in the new film.

Following Proyas’ statements earlier this year, the new film’s producer Molly Hassell defended the film in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m surprised it didn’t make the original filmmakers more proud, because it’s a step in the other direction, but it’s a necessary step to address age-old themes of love and loss,” Hassell told this newspaper. I hope everyone walks away from this movie reinvested in the people they love and care about.”

Sanders said Vanity Fair in February that Lee’s “soul is very much alive in this film” and that the “horrible tragedy” was “definitely something we always kept in mind while making the film.”

At the premiere, Skarsgård, 34, told PEOPLE exclusively that stepping into Lee’s role as Eric Draven was “terrifying.” Skarsgård added that the remake is “so different” from the original that Lee’s portrayal did not play a role in his approach.
