Brittany Mahomes Tells PEOPLE About ‘Terrifying’ Day an Allergy Led Son Bronze to Be Rushed to ER (Exclusive)

Brittany Mahomes supports the cause with a special bond with her family of four.

Speaking to PEOPLE about her partnership with OWYN, the Kansas City-based co-owner, 28, talks about how food allergies affect her two children — Patrick “Bronze” Lavon Mahomes III, who celebrated his first birthday last month, and Sterling Skye, 2½.

“I can relate to all moms and families dealing with children with severe food allergies,” Brittany tells PEOPLE. “The holiday season is extremely difficult when gatherings and activities revolve around food, and it’s special to be able to help these people and reassure them that they are not alone.”

Brittany says she and husband Patrick Mahomes always have to be “extremely aware of what food and drink we have in the household” because of her children’s allergies.

“We recently found out that my son Bronze has a severe peanut allergy, which led to a terrible trip to the emergency room. It was one of the scariest days of my life,” she says. “Luckily he was fine, but I had to deal with this new way of life and make sure my family was safe inside and outside the house.”

Of her daughter, she adds, “We’ve been aware of Sterling’s allergies since she was a baby. We’ve learned more during major childhood milestones and are so grateful to continue to discover helpful resources along the way.”

The mom of two and OWYN have pledged a six-figure joint donation to FARE, the nation’s leading food allergy advocacy nonprofit and the largest private funder of food allergy research.

“I hope this donation will spark change within the food allergy community,” says Brittany. “The ‘I Can’ campaign will help more than 85 million Americans affected by food allergies and intolerances. The support and empowerment of this community will help FARE’s transformative work in research, education and advocacy to improve the quality of life for these Americans.”

Brittany explains that the donations “will help fund innovative breakthroughs in food allergy research and treatment,” as well as help all types of families by providing education “about how to safely live with food allergies and providing educational tools to schools and restaurants across the country to ensure that people with food allergies can enjoy their meal without worry.”

The partnership has already opened Brittany’s eyes, adding to her own research on the subject.

“We’ve definitely become more aware of what products we bring into the household. OWYN has been a huge help in providing my family with clean, delicious protein shakes that I know are safe for our kids,” she says.

“I want Sterling and Bronze to grow up with a healthy relationship with food, and my goal as a mother is to make sure they feel safe and informed in an emergency. We’re learning so much.”

Food worries aside, the mom of two can help bring her kids together as they cheer on their dad and the Kansas City Chiefs.

“It’s been such an exciting season,” enthuses Brittany. “I loved having Sterling and Bronze by my side to watch their dad do what he loves!”
