James Cameron knows how to appreciate a good joke, even at his own expense.
Speaking to PEOPLE to promote the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release Titanic 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition, the award-winning director jokingly addresses the time when Ryan Gosling mocked his decision to use Papyrus, Microsoft’s default font, for Avatar logo. “The font thing is funny,” says Cameron, 69.
Fans Saturday night live can recall that it is Barbie star participated in a 2017 sketch aptly titled “Papyrus,” in which he plays an individual who can’t understand Cameron’s decision to use a relatively common typeface, which has been the default font on computers since Microsoft Office was released in ’97.

“He just pointed out Avatar, clicked the drop-down menu and just randomly selected Papyrus,” Gosling told the therapist in the sketch. “Like, like a thoughtless child, just wandering around the garden, just plucking leaves along the way…”
In response, Cameron jokes to PEOPLE, “I mean, the thing is, now we had a dilemma with the second movie. It’s like, ‘Are we going to keep the same font, the highest-grossing movie in history, or are we going to change it?’ Mess with the formula. It’s like, ‘F— that, we’re using a font. If Ryan gets a bunch of panties over it, so be it.’
Cameron’s Avatar sequel, 2022 Avatar: The Way of Waterit grossed a whopping $2.3 billion worldwide, but it hasn’t taken off Avatar‘s throne, which is the highest-grossing film of all time at $2.9 billion.

Despite the jokes about his film’s logo, Cameron still claims, “I love it Saturday night live.”
“You have to be able to laugh at yourself and yourself Saturday night live“, the Oscar winner continues. “They made me light a cigar on a hundred dollar bill after Titanic became the highest-grossing film in history. First, I don’t smoke cigars… and I would never light a hundred dollar bill. It would be bad for my kids to see that, but it’s funny.”
Both Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water will be available in 4K Ultra HD through digital retailers on December 12th and on Blu-ray Disc on December 19th. Titanic now available for the first time ever remastered on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc.
