Bryce Dallas Howard has long championed body positivity, especially in Hollywood.
And honestly, she feels done with the subject.
“I retired talking about my body,” the Argyll star tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “My focus is on what my body is doing, what my body is capable of.”
A reflective star, who broke out 20 years ago with M. Night Shyamalan Village and in 2022 the decade ended Jurassic World movies with Chris Pratt, recalls the years he spent gently pushing back when he was asked to lose weight for roles. She has now started inviting direct interviews before applying.
“What I found best was to communicate with people early in the hiring process,” she says. “What I would say is, ‘If you want to put me in, great. But if you think you want to hire me, but 20 pounds less than me or 40 pounds less than me, that’s actually a different actor. That’s not me, and I’m not going to shame you for this at this point. We need to have a real conversation here because if you’re hiring me, you’re hiring me.'”

This includes her latest film, Argyll (in theaters now). Ahead of filming director Matthew Vaughn’s new spy thriller, “I spoke to Matthew. And Matthew said, ‘Yes, I’m hiring your.‘” Playing an introverted spy novelist who finds herself fighting for her life when she’s forced into real espionage, “I was stronger for it,” she adds. “I could have done more because of it.”
Howard was always uncomfortable being the face of those conversations. “I’m someone who fluctuates,” she says. “It took me some time, some work and some counseling to really understand that dieting is the enemy, at least for me.”
Today, the mother of two focuses on strength – “training her body to achieve X, Y or Z for whatever circumstances I need to bring to life for the film.”
He is also constantly expanding his work behind the camera, directing episodes The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and upcoming ones Star Wars: Skeleton Crew after years spent studying the process on film sets.
Ron Howard says he would ‘probably’ act again if daughter Bryce Dallas Howard directed it
“I love directing and that’s just as important to me as acting,” she says. “It was really great to devote myself more to gaining experience, and I love to work.”
In this chapter of his life, Howard feels clear. “There are things I’ve come to terms with,” she says. And whatever comes next, she’s ready. “I feel very grateful for this stability in my relationships and in my family,” she says. “And in terms of the wildness of what the future may hold, stay tuned.”
