Bryce Dallas Howard’s Colorful Upstate New York Cottage Is ‘Like Joyful Springtime’ — See Inside!

Bryce Dallas Howard’s cottage is the stuff of fairy tales — and has been since she and husband Seth Gabel first laid eyes on it!

The actress and director, 42, revealed that the way she and Gabel, also 42, hit home was nothing short of fate in a new archdigest.com tour.

Although the couple’s primary home is on the West Coast, Howard (who grew up in Connecticut and studied—and met Gabel!—at NYU) always knew he wanted an East Coast residence, and eventually narrowed his search to the perfect part of the upstate. New York.

“We knew we wanted to live in this area, so we kept driving around, and my husband kept pointing out this house and kept saying, ‘Oh, I wish that house was for sale.'” Help says the star in the home tour video.

Then, a few days later, the stars aligned.

“Someone called us and said, ‘We saw you were visiting houses in the area. There’s a house that’s not on the market yet. We want to see if you’d be interested,'” Howard recalled. “And it was this house!”

Built in 1937, the lively cottage is a replica of the 18th-century home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where Howard shot her first movie, Villagetwo decades ago.

The home is full of character, from its older features — like intricate wallpaper depicting strawberry thieves and rare, 90-year-old wood — to its newer details, including a custom tablecloth with tulip motifs, an ode to Amsterdam, where she and Gabel fell in love.

In the dining room, Twilight alum decided to paint her windows a spring mint shade, a nod to the green depressed glass her grandmother gave her.

“Depression dishes” also reappear in Howard’s kitchen, the first part of the home she fell in love with and the only part she decorated with a Parisian influence.

“There’s a ton of depressing dishes everywhere in this house. This all belonged to my grandmother,” Howard said, pointing to the colorful, intricate glassware on her counter.

“I actually had it hidden behind doors and closets and whatnot for years and years and years and the moment when [Howard’s designer] Claire Thomas saw it and said, ‘Oh my God, this is the inspiration for the whole house,'” she added. “So it’s really beautiful.”

A photo of her grandmother Jean also adds a touch of nostalgia to the home’s master suite.

“This is the most important person,” Howard said of the black-and-white footage. “She was an actress and an absolute total ham. She was very hilarious and a lot of this house was really inspired by her.”

In fact, the only place where the spring green and pink color scheme inspired by Grandma Jean doesn’t reach is the bedroom of the couple’s daughter Beatrice. Instead, the 12-year-old’s favorite color, blue, dominates.
