Buccaneers Quarterback Baker Mayfield Gets Called Out by Fans for Popping Zyn on the Sideline Mid Game

Baker Mayfield caused a commotion on the sidelines during the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game Monday Night Football game.

When a broadcast caught Mayfield, 29, ingesting something on the sidelines during a game, fans on social media claimed to recognize the product as Zyn, a nicotine product that has seen a recent surge in demand.

“That Bucs game was so stressful Baker Mayfield had to make a zyn,” wrote one account on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Another user said, “I saw video of Baker Mayfield throwing Zyn on the sidelines last night. No wonder the Bucs lost,” after Tampa Bay’s 41-31 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday.

Others speculated that the NFL would fine Mayfield if he was found to have taken Zyn during a game because the league prohibits players from using nicotine products on the field.

But the quarterback is reportedly out of touch with the league. ESPN’s Jenna Laine said Friday, Oct. 25, that he will not be disciplined.

“I was told by a league source that Baker Mayfield will not be fined for using Zyn on the sidelines,” Laine reported. “Zyn is a nicotine product, and the NFL has banned nicotine on the sidelines and in interviews. He’ll get a letter reminding him of that.”

PEOPLE has reached out to Buccaneers and NFL representatives for comment.

Zyn first hit the market in 2014, according to USA Today, but their popularity has grown in recent years.

However, Swedish Match, the company that makes the product, was not thrilled about their product possibly appearing on the sidelines of the NFL.

In a statement to TMZ after the game, a company representative said they appreciate their loyal customers, but “encourage them not to display the product in any situation where it could be seen by someone under the age of 21.”

Mayfield and the Buccaneers will next face the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, October 27th.
