Burney started driving karts when he was five years old. He started driving stock cars at Stockton 99 Raceway when he was 16 years old. The following year, he entered and competed in various club series, including the USAC Western States Sprint Car Series, West Coast Tracks, NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Southwest Series and others. In 2005, Lamar joined Kevin Harvick Enterprises and began racing in the NASCAR Busch Series, Craftsman Truck Series, and NASCAR Grand National Division, West Series.
In the Truck Series, he twice drove the Chevy Silverado No. 92, finishing 21st both times. Similarly, in his Busch Series start in the No. 33 Chevy, he finished eighth. Lamar also worked for Aviation Transport Specialists in Nashville, TN as a flight instructor.
