When Robin was two years old, his father saw him trying to hit a pebble with a stick. After a few years, his father moved to Ranchi and the family started living in Namkum, about 15 kilometers from the city. When Robin started school, he became even more keen on playing cricket. In an interview, his father mentioned the challenges of affording the education of his three children. Sometimes he had to borrow money and sacrifice his basic needs to support Robin’s cricketing dreams. Despite these difficulties, he tried his best to help Robin pursue his passion for cricket. According to Robin’s mother, Robin once behaved very well in Khunti (a district in Jharkhand state). Reporters visited their home and her photo appeared in the newspapers the next day. She jokingly called Robin’s father to share the news, mentioning that her photo was in the newspaper but his was not. In another interview, Robin’s mother mentioned that when they first went to a sports store to buy bats and other equipment for him, they initially thought it would cost around Rs. 2000. To their surprise, the bat alone cost Rs. 5000. The shop owner looked suspicious, wondering if they could afford it. Despite the challenges, they managed to borrow some money and purchase the kit. He started playing cricket at the age of 8. His father was oriented towards sports due to his military background and the family moved to Ranchi. It was there that Robin was introduced to cricket. Like many kids in the 2000s, he wanted to be like legendary cricketer MS Dhoni. Robin’s father mentioned in interviews that despite his lack of cricket knowledge, he would take Robin and his sisters to the park to bowl with Robin. He said in an interview,
I taught him imaandaari (honesty) and wafadari (loyalty). I hope he keeps his feet on the ground, chases his dreams, gives 100% and keeps working hard. In 9th Bihar Regiment, our battle cry is “Karam hi dharam hai” (Work is worship). I’ve told him to remember that. “
