Career

Olney began reporting baseball as a beat writer for the Nashville Banner’s Triple-A Nashville Sounds in 1989. He developed a strong friendship with the great Don Meyer, head coach of the men’s basketball team at David, Lipscomb University. Olney previously worked for the San Diego Union-Tribune and the Baltimore Sun.

He joined the Times in 1997 and won an Associated Press award in his first year. Olney almost had a little problem with Deion Sanders, a Yankee prospect who at the time was known more for his football skills. Buster Olney wanted to do a story on Sanders but was turned down. In response, Olney published what he considered a critical essay about Sanders later in his career. Olney is answered by Sanders writing on a baseball. “If you keep writing like that all your life, you’ll always be a loser.”
