Busy Philipps Reveals What Amy Poehler Told Her Before Playing a ‘Totally Different’ Mrs. George in Mean Girls (Exclusive)

Busy Philipps received moral support from her Mean girls mom predecessor Amy Poehler before she took over mrs. George.

On Monday, Girls5eva the actress, 44, attended the premiere of the film in New York Mean girls. In the film, Philipps takes over June George, the role he originally played Saturday night live alum, 52, in the 2004 cult classic teen comedy.

Two decades later, Poehler has some pointers for her fellow comedian.

Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE on the red carpet, Philipps says Baby Mama the actress was “so happy” to get the part.

When asked if she talked to Poehler about the performance before filming or decided to take her own approach, Philipps admitted that the ladies were “seeing each other” but “couldn’t remember if we talked about it.”

“Which is so embarrassing, but I think we realized it was going to be completely different anyway, and we’re all friends,” she says, referring to Tina Fey, who wrote and starred in the original film as beloved high school teacher Mrs. Norbury.

Philipps also admits, “I’m a big fan of the original and her performance.” The actress adds that she dressed as Poehler Mean girls “a few years ago” Halloween character.

The Cougar Town talent walked the carpet with her 15-year-old daughter Birdie as a companion. The pair posed for pictures on the red carpet before taking their seats.

Philipps tells PEOPLE that she doesn’t think her kids see her as a “cool mom,” because she doesn’t try to be friends with them.

“I think I’m cool, but my kids don’t think I’m cool. And I’m aware of that. I also think I’m clear about the fact that I’m their mother and not their friend, so that definitely makes me uncool.”

Her daughter, Cricket, 10, who she shares with ex Marc Silverstein, was not present at the star-studded event.

Lindsay Lohan, who played lead Cady Heron in the original 2004 film, surprised fans on the carpet. Fey, 53, who is returning to direct and star in the musical, was also at the premiere. Among the new stars were Christopher Briney, Reneé Rapp and Angourie Rice.

Megan Thee Stallion was also in attendance as she and Rapp, 23, collaborated on the single “Not My Fault” for the film.

The music video is packed Mean girl references.

In the song, Megan, 28, refers to herself as “Black Regina George” as she mimics one of the character’s most iconic looks from the film — a white tank top with two large holes revealing a purple bra.

The musical remake hits theaters on January 12.
