Profession
CM Ibrahim’s political career began in 1967, when he was just 12 years old, delivering an election speech for his father’s friend, a Congress candidate. Former Karnataka chief minister S. Nijalingappa noticed him and introduced him to another former chief minister Veerendra Patil two years after the INC split. Ibrahim stayed with Patil until his death. In 1972, Ibrahim lost the assembly by-election in Chanarajpet constituency in Bangalore. In 1975, when India declared Emergency, he was one of the first opposition leaders to be arrested under MISA in Karnataka. After the emergency ended, he was released and began working as an activist for the PPP. In 1977, he lost the contest for the Lok Sabha seat in Darwar South constituency to Congress candidate FH Mohsin.
CM Ibrahim won the Legislative Assembly seat as the PPP candidate in the 1978 elections. He represents Bengaluru’s Shivaji Nagar constituency in the Karnataka Assembly. Initially a supporter of Chief Minister R. Gundu Rao, he later gained trust and became an Indian National Congress minister in the 1980s. However, he later left to join the All India Progressive Party and later the Janata Party (Secular). In 1996 and 1997, he held various portfolios in the governments led by Deve Gowda and Gujral, including handling matters in the civil aviation and tourism and information and broadcasting sectors. In 2008, he supported Siddaramaiah and switched to the Congress party.
CM Ibrahim returned to the INC in 2008 after differences with the JD(S) leadership. He served as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from August 24, 2017 to August 5, 2022. He served as the president of the Janata Dal (Secular) in Karnataka from April 17, 2022 until his dismissal. In November 2023, former Indian Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda expelled Ibrahim from the Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S), citing “anti-party activities”. Although Ibrahim switched between the Congress and the PPP, then returned to the Congress and later to the JD(S), by the end of 2023, he did not belong to any political party. He was reportedly trying to take control of the party led by Dev Gowda.
