Camila Mendes Says Riverdale Stars’ Group Text Is Still ‘Lit’ and Dishes on What They Chat About (Exclusive)

Camila Mendes remains connected with her ex Riverdale costars six months after the series finale aired.

In the latest episode PEOPLE at 10The 29-year-old actress opens up about saying goodbye to the hit CW series and her lasting relationship with her co-stars.

“I think I was very ready for this next chapter by the time it ended, even though it was obviously very emotional and sad by the time it ended,” she says. “I was kind of ready to age out of that phase and come into this new phase and I think it was kind of effortless.”

The Upgraded star adds: “I think in a way I’ve been really happy to have a bit more free time and enjoy more quality time with people I haven’t had the chance to see as much.”

When host Makho Ndlovu asked if her group chat with co-stars Lili Reinhart and Madelaine Petsch was “on,” she replied: “It’s pretty on. I have to say.”

“No, it’s not even like… It’s not angry,” shares Mendes, who played Veronica Lodge on the show. “We all prefer to talk about things that worry us, or say, ‘Hey, guys, are you experiencing this?’ Like, we really rely on each other, especially coming out of this phase of our lives.”

“We all kind of experience the same anxieties at the same time and it’s really nice to have people who relate to you in that way as well,” she continues.

In June, Mendes celebrated the end of the show — which ran for seven seasons on The CW — with an emotional tribute on Instagram that featured adorable snaps of behind-the-scenes moments with her co-stars. “that’s the end of Veronica 💔” Take revenge the actress wrote next to the pictures. “There are no descriptions or photo prints that can illustrate what an emotional experience it was filming our last episode of Riverdale. I’m not just saying goodbye to a TV show, I’m saying goodbye to an entire life I created in Vancouver, to a transformative period that shaped me as an adult, to a community of people who saw the best and worst of me over seven intense seasons.”

“No matter how ready you are to move on, breakups are painful, and leaving this show will be a grieving process for all of us,” she continued.

Mendes went on to thank the show’s “loyal fans” for “actively supporting me on this journey with all the gifts, flowers and balloons. handmade art and handwritten letters.”

“I appreciate you so much,” she wrote. “thank you for showing Veronica the love she deserves.”

Mendes then concluded her tribute by expressing her gratitude to the “hardworking” crew, her “beautiful family of talented” colleagues, and Riverdale creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa for all the memories over the years.

In your photo carousel, Riverdale star shared a sweet snap of her and co-star Reinhart (Betty) wearing their ’50s wardrobe. She also shared a selfie of her and Reinhart in a group hug with KJ Apa (Archie) and Cole Sprouse (Jughead) — aka “the main four” — and some BTS memories with Petsch (Cheryl), Casey Cott (Kevin), Vanessa Morgan (Toni), Nicholas Barasch (Julian) and Charles Melton (Reggie).

Mendes also revealed on her Instagram Story that she got a new tattoo — a simple drawing of her pearl, which also happens to be Veronica’s “signature gemstone” — to celebrate the momentous occasion. “new tattoo to celebrate the end of an era,” she captioned the black and white snap.

Mendes played Veronica from The CW show — which is very loosely based on Archie comics — premiered in 2017.

The series originally focused on the characters of high school students who investigate the mysterious murder of Jason Blossom. As the series continued, it began to embrace genre and outrageous stories, toying with everything from serial killers to superpowers to time travel. The final season focuses on the characters stuck in the 50s, with no memory of the events of the previous seasons, after the city was wiped out by a comet in the Season 6 finale.
