Can you see the Duck or Rabbit? What Mikel Arteta’s 100-year-old optical illusion will tell you about your brain

It’s a simple, black-and-white drawing from 1892.

But it is also an optical illusion that captivates psychologists, philosophers and… Mikel Arteta.

The sketch-like image can be seen as a duck or a rabbit, sometimes just depending on which side you start looking at.

But for the Arsenal boss, who has signed a new three-year deal ahead of Sunday’s trip to Spurs, the picture is on the SAME side.

But first things first. What should the drawing SHOULD indicate?

Experts focused on two areas.

The starting point is that what you usually see may depend on your own situation – not just your particular personality.

This means that your environment, upbringing, and even the time of year can influence your thinking.

The Swiss, for example, usually see a hare at Easter and a duck in October.

However, another use of drawing is more exciting.

It is thought to help test your creativity.

The faster you can switch from seeing a rabbit to a duck – or vice versa – the more creative you are.

But Arteta’s own use of the image is very different.

He doesn’t mind if his squad sees a rabbit or a duck, as long as they ALL see the same thing.

The Spaniard explained why in the show “Arsenal: All or Nothing” on Amazon Prime.

He asked the documentary makers to tell him what they saw – and got conflicting answers.

Arteta then told them: “This is the most difficult thing in a football club…

“My only goal is for everyone to see a duck or a rabbit because if you see a duck and I see a rabbit, we are on a different path, in a different direction.”

He added: “I think we’re starting to get in line where we all see the duck.”

Arteta is confident that such unity can keep his players on the straight and narrow – mentally.

He said: “I think there’s a fine line between confidence and complacency.

“Winning is one thing, deserving to win is another thing, performing at the level we want is another thing entirely.”

Some people claim that whatever you see in the picture first, you can’t undo it.

But Arteta hopes the message from the picture is completely different.

It’s this: once you learn a purpose, you can’t unlearn it.
