Candi Staton News
I was born in Alabama. My mother didn’t like the way my father behaved. Here he was known as a “weekend alcoholic.” Despite working all week, he would take all of his winnings over the weekend, squander it, and lose the gamble.
I met Bishop Mattie Lou Jewell, a very wealthy and very tall black woman who controlled 30 churches and ran a school, when I was ten years old. My mother took my older sister, older brother, and me on the bus to Cleveland. My sister and I lip sync to little tunes for fun. After listening to us, Bishop Jewell commented, “My church has a pageant every Tuesday night.” We destroy the building.
We got free admission to Bishop Jewell School in exchange for singing with Naomi, his granddaughter. When my father tried to visit him but he was drunk, my mother told the girls to go because “Bishop Jewell can do more for you than I can.” The Nashville Gardens were stunning when we arrived. We stayed in a big house, not a dormitory. We taught Naomi harmony and together we formed the Jewel Gospel Trio.
I developed my mettle on the Chitlin’ Circuit. The promoters occasionally stole money and ran away. Tyrone Davis and [singers] Johnnie Taylor sat me down and said, “Girl, you need a gun.” When the promoters would try to play me, he would take out my little .32, put it on the table and threaten them with a gun saying, “Don’t mess with me or I’ll shoot you.” I would take payment from her, go home, and tuck my little pistol into the sleeve of my bag. I had a gun with me.
I never married my third husband. He was a con man and a thief. He forged documents and hired someone to pose as a judge. We never got married, so I didn’t have to divorce him.
