In 1984, Captain (PhD) CR Leena, after completing his science studies, passed the All India Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) Entrance Examination and joined AFMC where he pursued Bachelor of Medicine in Internal Medicine. From 1989 to 1990, she pursued a Master of Surgery (MS) in Oncology at the Army Research and Referral Hospital (R&R).

Captain CR Leena was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps (AMC) of the Indian Army in 1989. CR Leena was posted to the Anantnag district of Kashmir in 1992 and retired from the Indian Army Medical Corps in 1996 after serving five years in the Indian Army. Indian Army as Captain.
After his discharge from the army in 1996, CR Leena worked as a junior resident doctor at the Holy Family Hospital, New Delhi. In 2000, she was appointed senior resident doctor at the same hospital. She continued to work there until the end of 2001. From 2002 to 2003, CR Leena worked as a Clinical Assistant at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Cancer Research and Research Center (RGCIRC). In 2004, she left the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center and joined Rockland Hospital, New Delhi as associate consultant until 2007. From 2008 to 2013, she worked as a consultant at Fortis Hospital, New Delhi. In 2014, she left Fortis Group and joined Dharamshila Cancer Center as a consultant. She left Dharamshala Cancer Center in 2015. In 2016, CR Leena joined the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Center as Consultant Surgical Oncology.
Senna Medal
In 1992, CR Leena was posted to Ananthnag district of south Kashmir. There she was appointed Medical Officer (MO) of 3rd Battalion, 5th Gurkha Rifles (3/5 GR). On the evening of July 16, 1992, when she was heading to the battalion headquarters, her convoy came under heavy fire from armed militants. CR Leena, regardless of her own safety, rushed to the injured troops and provided first aid to them, saving many lives. CR Leena was awarded the Sena Medal (SM) for his gallantry during the Indian Army Day Parade on 15 January 1995.

- In 1995, Captain CR Leena became the first woman officer in India to receive the Gallantry Award.
- In 2021, Captain Leena’s son Shivrit Dadhwal revealed on Twitter that it was CR Leena who became the first Indian female officer to be awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry and not Colonel Mitali Madhumita, who was the second Indian to receive the medal female officer. Received the Valor Award.
