Captain Shiva Chauhan is an Indian Army officer in the 14th Arms and Fury Regiment of the Indian Army. On January 2, 2023, she became the first female officer to be deployed to the Kumar Post on the Siachen Glacier, the world’s highest battlefield.

Captain Shiva Chouhan was born in Udaipur, Rajasthan. She studies in a school in Udaipur. At the age of 11, Shiva lost his father. After her father died, her mother took care of her studies. Shiva holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from NJR Institute of Technology, Udaipur. From childhood, Chauhan aspired to join the Indian Armed Forces. In March 2020, Chauhan secured the all-India rank in the Service Selection Board interview at Allahabad. Later, she was recommended for SSC-Tech 25 (Army) by 19SSB, Allahabad. Shiva was trained at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. After the training, Shiva Chauhan was appointed to join the Indian Army Engineer Corps.

Profession

In May 2021, Shiva was appointed as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army Corps of Engineers. Later, she was promoted to captain through her ranking on the field. In July 2022, on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Dewas, Shiva Chauhan successfully led the Sura Soi Cycling Expedition from Siachen War Memorial to Kargil War Memorial, covering a distance of 508 kilometers. Thereafter, she accepted the challenge of leading the men of the Surasoy Engineer Regiment at the Siachen Glacier, the highest battlefield in the world. In the same year, Shiva was shortlisted for training at the Siachen Combat School due to his outstanding performance.

Break the glass ceiling

After being selected, Shiva was assigned to the Fire and Fury Regiment of the Indian Army’s Northern Command and went to the Siachen Combat School to undergo rigorous training with the officers and soldiers of the Indian Army.

Training includes ice climbing, endurance training, avalanche and crevasse rescue, and survival drills.

After one month of strenuous training, Shiva Chauhan was posted at Kumar Post in the Siachen Glacier to lead the engineer team for three months; the team was given the responsibility of many combat engineering tasks. The Siachen Glacier is located in the Karakoram Mountains of the Himalayas at an altitude of approximately 15,600 feet and is known as the highest military zone in the world.

Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps celebrated Lord Shiva’s feat on Twitter,

Break the glass ceiling. Captain Shiva Chauhan of Fire and Fury Engineers became the first female officer to be deployed at Kumar Post, the highest battlefield in the world, after completing grueling training.

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated Capt Chauhan on Twitter, calling her achievement an “encouraging sign”. He tweeted,

good news! I am absolutely delighted to see more women joining the Armed Forces and taking on every challenge with grace. This is an encouraging sign. My best wishes to Captain Shiva Chauhan. “
