Cardi B Nearly Vomits While Trying Balut, a Fertilized Duck Egg: ‘Not for Me’

Cardi B tests her foodie limits.

On Wednesday, the 31-year-old rapper shared a video on TikTok of her trying balut, a dish made from fertilized duck eggs popular in the Philippines.

The “WAP” rapper, who is in the culinary space with her whipped cream brand Whipshots, kicked off her taste-test video with an homage to TikTok food critic Keith Lee.

“I’ve been watching this for a long time, it’s called balut. Got it, let’s try and rate it from 1 to 10,” she said, copying Lee’s well-known TikTok intro. “This egg is huge! It’s like this egg gives two yolks.”

Before biting into the dish, the rapper took a number of medications including Pepto Bismol for “stomach protection.”

“I have a very sensitive stomach,” she said. “Now, let’s begin.”

“If you’re a true Bardigang, you know I can eat anything with lemon and salt, so I took lemon, salt and pepper,” she said, indicating her bowl of spices ready to sprinkle over the egg. “Let’s try!”

Balut is prepared by taking a fertilized egg, usually duck or sometimes hen, leaving the egg to develop for 16 to 20 days and cooking it with the meat inside. The resulting broth is said to have a strong flavor, along with tender duck meat (which sometimes comes with feathers and a beak if incubated long enough). It was previously used in James Corden’s “Spill Your Guts” segment, but was removed after claims that the segment incited anti-Asian racism.

Cardi continued her video by pouring her lemon mixture into an open egg and taking a sip of the soup, before promptly choking on it.

“No. You know, I’m just going to hold my nose and just drink,” Cardi said, preparing to dig in even more.

Cracking open the whole egg and pulling out the duck meat, Cardi immediately took a bite – before spitting it out and going frameless.

“No. I don’t like it,” she said. “… It’s very meaty. It literally tastes like uncooked chicken. I don’t know, it was just too gamey for me. Too much meat smell.”

“… I still like my s— well done, I don’t even like my steak rare,” she said. “But the liquid they had in there was good.”

The rapper decided to ditch her 1-10 rating scale and decided to simply call it “not for me.”

“But I’m so glad I tried,” she finished. “Maybe I did it wrong. Maybe I should eat it from someone who knows how to cook it or something, because I couldn’t.”
