Mulligan’s Balenciaga dress paid tribute to a pivotal moment in the film for which she was nominated

No one does classic Hollywood style like Carey Mulligan.

The three-time Oscar nominee graced the 2024 Oscars red carpet in a stunning black mermaid gown with a scalloped hem over white tulle — a recreation of Balenciaga’s classic 1951 design. Completing her ensemble, she accessorized with vintage Fred Leighton cut diamond earrings and black elbow-length gloves. Joining Mulligan on the carpet was her husband, musician Marcus Mumford, who looked dapper in an all-black suit. Adding a touch of cool, he also wore a pair of sunglasses.

Mulligan, 38, is nominated for best actress for her portrayal of Felicia Montealegre, the wife of composer Leonard Bernstein — played by Bradley Cooper, who earned his own best actor nomination — in Maestro. Rounding out her category is Annette Bening (Nyad), Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) and Emma Stone (Poor people).

According to the press release, “A pivotal moment in the film occurs in 1951, when Felicia marries Leonard Bernstein. So, in honor of this true story, the iconic dress from Cristóbal Balenciaga’s 1951 Winter collection has been recreated, making the year emblematic charm . . . The original is currently housed at the Kyoto Costume Institute, meaning the Balenciaga atelier in Paris designed and recreated the dress for Ms Mulligan using only sketches, photographs and a pattern as a guide.”

Creative director Demna was committed to preserving the vintage feel of the dress, the statement said, while making sure the fit and finish looked modern on Mulligan.
