Carl Crawford was born on August 5, 1981 and grew up in the fifth ward of Houston. He attended Jefferson Davis High School and excelled in baseball, basketball and football as a student. After his sophomore year, he was picked up by baseball coach Wille Ansley, who suggested he play in Major League Baseball.
Carl joined the Pasadena Stars select baseball team, where he gained Major League experience and attracted the attention of Major League Baseball scouts. He had the opportunity to play guard for five different teams and was offered a college basketball scholarship to play point guard, but turned down both offers and chose baseball as his career.

Carl Crawford made his MLB debut in 2002, at the age of 20, with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and hit his first home run against the Kansas City Royals. Along with Juan Pierre, he received the Negro League Baseball Museum’s ‘Cool Papa’ Bell Legacy Award in 2003. In 2004, he hit 11 home runs, 55 RBIs and 19 triples and was named to the All-Star Game held in his hometown of Houston . The BBWAA also named him the MVP of his team, the Devil Rays. In 2005, he led his team with 15 home runs, 81 RBIs and 15 triples, becoming the team’s third .300 hitter.
