Carling LOSES crown as Britain’s best-selling draught beer as sales of rival lager soar

ITALIAN-style Birra Moretti is shifting more pints than Carling to become Britain’s best-selling draft beer.

Punters spent £246.7m on Moretta in the latest quarter – increasing sales by 9.6 per cent compared to the same three-month period last year.

Carling, brewed in Burton upon Trent, Staffs, has lost its top spot as Britain's best-selling draft beer

Heineken’s owners, who bought the Italian company in 1996, put the increase down to pub-goers opting for more premium pints despite an overall decline in beer drinking.

It was also fueled by a multi-million dollar nationwide marketing campaign to launch unfiltered Birr Moretti Sale Di Mare.

Heineken’s Veronica Sica said that Brits love Mediterranean-themed beers, showing “an increased importance of premium experiences and a willingness to pay more for them”.

Moretti is produced in Manchester, while Coors-owned Carling is produced in Burton upon Trent, Staffs.

The American giant also produces Madrí Exceptional — which is marketed as Madrid’s Modern Lager even though it’s brewed in Yorkshire.

Data firm NIQ said its sales reached £93.3m last year.

Cruzcampo, Birrificio Angelo Poretti, Peroni and San Miguel also did well.

Industry analysts CGA say last year’s top ten beers also included Foster’s, Stella Artois and Tennent’s.

HEINEKEN HISTORY UK

HEINEKEN NV is a Dutch multinational brewing company founded in 1864 by Gerard Adriaan Heineken in Amsterdam.

The beer giant’s UK business dates back to 1864 when it first started exporting beer to the UK market.

It wasn’t until the late 2000s that Heineken expanded its UK presence to a whole new level when it took over Scottish and Newcastle (S&N).

The British brewery, which owned well-known brands including Strongbow, Bullmers, John Smith’s and Newcastle Brown Ale, was snapped up by Heineken in 2008.

The acquisition also saw the ownership of thousands of S&N’s pubs, which Heineken soon rebranded as Star Pubs & Bars.

As of 2024, Heineken operates over 2,400 of these sites.

The beer giant has also produced over 300 brands and 165 breweries worldwide.

Famous brands produced by Heineken also include:

  • Amstel
  • Moretti
  • Tiger
  • The desperate
  • Red stripe
  • Kingfisher
  • Old Mout Cider
