Bill Skarsgård Says It Was 'Daunting' Stepping Into Brandon Lee's The Crow Character (Exclusive)

Stars from Crow they are ready to present their new film!

Bill Skarsgård, FKA Twigs and director Rupert Sanders attended the film’s world premiere at Angelike’s Village East in New York City on Tuesday, August 20. Crow is a remake of the 1994 film of the same name starring the late Brandon Lee.

At the premiere, Skarsgård, 34, tells PEOPLE exclusively that stepping into Lee’s role as Eric Draven was “intimidating.” He notes that while he’s part of the 2024 run, there have been previous remakes in both film and TV, adding, “So I’m not the first to take that position.”

“The iconic performance, the tragic thing that happened with Brandon,” he continues. “And for me, I approached this like any other job, like, ‘What is this story? How can I justify this story?’ ”

Skarsgård also tells PEOPLE that because the latest iteration is “so different” from the original, Lee’s portrayal didn’t play a role in his approach.

“We didn’t remake that movie and that was never the intention,” he says. “I feel like that movie and its performance are iconic and shouldn’t be messed with at all. So I’m glad we tried to do something completely different with it.”

The film follows a man named Eric (Skarsgård) who is resurrected after a murder to take revenge on those who killed him and his fiancee, according to the film’s official synopsis. It continues: “Given the opportunity to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out on a quest for ruthless revenge against their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to right the wrongs.”

crow, directed by Sanders and also starring Danny Huston, Isabella Wei, Laura Birn, Sami Bouajila and Jordan Bolger. Zach Baylin and William Schneider were screenwriters. The film comes 30 years after the original 1994 film, which was struck by tragedy after Bruce Lee’s son Lee died at the age of 28 following an accidental shooting on the film’s set in 1993. In a criminal investigation, the district attorney involved in the case refused file charges against the production company behind the film.

That film was completed after his death and released in May 1994. Both the remake and the 1994 film were based on James O’Barr’s 1989 graphic novel.

Sanders said Vanity Fair in February that Lee’s “soul is very much alive in this film” and that the “horrible tragedy” was “definitely something we always kept in mind while making the film.”
