The Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed to CNN that Carolyn Bryant Donham, the white woman whose prosecution resulted in the 1955 lynching of black youth Emmett Till in Mississippi and whose role in the gruesome death was recently reviewed by a grand jury, died in Louisiana.

Donham, 88, died Tuesday in Westlake, according to the coroner’s death letter. In a statement released Thursday, Malik Shabazz of Black Lawyers for Justice said Donham’s legacy “will be one of dishonesty and injustice.”

Emmett, then 14, was beaten and killed in August 1955 after allegedly outing Bryant, now Donham, in Money.

Emmett was later dragged from his bed by her husband, Roy Bryant, and JW Milam, who also beat him before forcing him into the back of a pickup truck, where they shot him in the head and dumped his body in the Tallahatchie River. . An all-white jury found them not guilty of murder when Carolyn Bryant testified that Emmett grabbed her and verbally threatened her during the trial.

In a 1956 interview with Look magazine, Milam, who died in 1980, and Bryant, who died in 1994, confessed to the murder. In 2007, a grand jury in Mississippi decided not to prosecute Donham.

In 1955, Donham testified that Emmett grabbed her by the arm and waist and advanced while claiming that he had previously had affairs with “white women”. However, Timothy Tyson claimed that when he presented that testimony at her trial in a 2008 meeting with Donham, she informed him: “That part is not true.”
