Kim Tae-ri Apologizes After She Faced Backlash Over Her Vlog Subtitles Controversy

Kim Tae-ri posted a personal apology on her Instagram account on May 23, 2023, in response to the current controversy surrounding her vlog subtitles. The message, written in Korean and English, was shared after the actress’ agency released a statement about it.

Riots broke out the day before when the actress 25, 21 posted photos from the third episode of her vlog and said that English subtitles had finally been added after almost a year of waiting. She also announced the launch of a volunteer initiative where fans from around the world can help her subtitle 20-30 minute episodes in their languages.

Kim Tae-ri and her agency, Management Mmm, were immediately reprimanded for asking to work for free without any remuneration. As the backlash grew, the agency released a statement explaining its goals. When that did not satisfy netizens, the actress apologized and clarified her point of view. Kim Tae-ri said that she was the one who added English subtitles and designed the project to be accessible to fans around the world. She said she should have approached her fans more carefully.

Kim Tae-ri personally apologized to the volunteers and made a public statement about her subtitle problem.

Kim Tae-ri posted on her Instagram account on May 22 to inform her followers about the inclusion of English subtitles in the third episode of her vlog, which aired on YouTube a year ago. She also hopes to cheer them up by revealing that a fourth volume will be released soon and featuring volunteer captioning. Unfortunately, the strategy failed. The actress included a link to a Google Form in a now-deleted Instagram post, asking fans from different countries to translate her vlogs to make them more accessible. However, netizens were quick to punish her for her “talent donation” behavior, sometimes referred to as free labor.

It takes a lot of work to translate a video that is almost half an hour long. It’s a legitimate business, aside from producing subtitles, which many believe should have been rewarded with money or some special product.

The 25-year-old actress once again apologized on Instagram for not thinking twice before embarking on such a project. She also said that she wrote her blog from start to finish, filmed, edited, and added English subtitles. She stated:

“I shouldn’t have approached my fans like I was asking for talent donations.” That was an obvious mistake and I’m sorry I wasn’t aware of it. I apologize to those who have been troubled by my thoughtless thoughts and actions.”

The actress also said that she apologized to her followers who expressed interest in helping.

“I understand that a sincere apology is more important than anything else.” I have written to apologize to all those who volunteered to help with the translation work.”
