How is CAT percentile calculated?
To calculate the CAT percentile, the raw scores of each candidate are first calculated taking into account the marking scheme ie 3 marks for each correct answer and -1 for each incorrect answer. No marks are deducted for wrong answers in non-MCQ type questions. After determining the raw scores, the CAT percentile is calculated. Check out the step-by-step process below:
Step 1: Each candidate’s score is scored section-wise, and then the overall score is determined by adding up the section-wise scores.
Step 2: In the second step, the section scores and total scores are normalized to calculate a scaled CAT score.
Step 3: Finally, the normalized scores are converted into percentiles which are transmitted through the CAT score card.
What is the CAT normalization process?
Since the CAT MBA exam is held at different times, a normalization process is required where the marks of candidates are scaled to make the grading process uniform. The normalization process has been used for years to measure the performance of candidates in different sessions. See important parameters for CAT normalization below:
- The highest score
- Lowest rating
- Top 10 percentile
- Bottom 10 percentile
