Catherine O’Hara Recalls 'Sickening' Moment She Was Nearly Separated from Her Sons à la Home Alone (Exclusive)

The ‘Schitt’s Creek’ Emmy winner recalled the incident while promoting her new action comedy ‘Argylle’

Catherine O’Hara is not one to judge Kate and Peter McAllister for leaving their son alone Home alone movies.

After famously exclaiming “Kevin!” on screen in 1990 when she realized she had gone to Paris without Macaulay Culkin, her fictional son, O’Hara, 69, and her husband, Bo Welch, had a real scare with their sons Matthew and Luke (now grown.)

“Once we were in New York; I think it was New York. Bo and I entered the subway, we turned around, the door was closing, but it wasn’t on,” she recalls. “I screamed and people screamed with me. Everyone joined in.”

Fortunately, the door opened again and the boys made it. “It makes me sick to think what could have happened,” says O’Hara, who stars in the new action comedy Argyll.

“What is happening? You are on the train, it is going to the next station. And you think, will it stay in that place? Will they be safe? Will we be back? Are they going to think, ‘Oh, I’m going to get on the next train and go there?'” says O’Hara. “We didn’t have phones.”

Although the experience was horrific, O’Hara has only good memories of the creation Home alonewhich she calls “the perfect movie.”

“It was wonderful. All those kids playing our kids were just wonderful,” she says.

“[Director] Chris Columbus, a wonderful man. He is a family man himself. I think he already had five children at that time. AND [screenwriter] John Hughes. John Hughes wasn’t there much, but he obviously wrote such a beautiful script,” O’Hara continues.

O’Hara recently reunited with Culkin at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony and paid tribute to him as he received his star.

Home alone was, is and always will be a beloved global sensation… the reason families around the world can’t let a year go by without watching and loving Home alone it’s together because of Macaulay Culkin,” she said at the Dec. 1 event.

“You deserve your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame,” she told Culkin from the podium.

“And thank you for including me, your fake mom who left you home alone not once but twice, to share in this happy occasion. I’m so proud of you,” she added jokingly Home alone and its sequel from 1992. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
