Cause of Death Revealed for Mass. Parents, Teenage Daughter Found After ‘Deadly Incident of Domestic Violence’

A couple and their teenage daughter who were found dead in their Dover, Massachusetts home last Thursday died of a murder-suicide, authorities have determined.

The bodies of Rakesh Kamal, 57, Teena Kamal, 54, and Arianne Kamal, 18, were discovered Thursday night in a “fatal domestic violence incident,” Dover police confirmed last week. Rakesh then recovered the firearm, police added at a press conference on Friday.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Rakesh shot and killed his wife and daughter before turning the gun on himself, Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey told NBC10 Boston and CBS News Boston.

The causes of death were revealed after the preliminary autopsy results of the Kamal family.

Prosecutors said the gun used in the incident was a .40-caliber Glock 22 and was not registered to, or licensed to, Rakesh.

The investigation is ongoing while testing of the gun continues. A final autopsy report is expected in a few weeks, authorities said, according to NBC10 Boston and CBS News Boston.

The bodies of the Kamal family were discovered by the police after they were called to the family residence by a relative who came to check on them. Police were dispatched at around 19:24 local time on Thursday to a house on Wilson’s Way, where they found the deceased family members.

“It’s clear that this is a situation limited to this individual residence and there is no threat to other residents of the city,” Morrissey said at a news conference Friday.

In a statement released before the news conference, the DA’s office believes that evidence at the scene “does not indicate the involvement of any outside parties, but does suggest that this is a fatal incident of domestic violence.”

“There is not believed to be any lasting danger to the Dover community related to this incident,” the DA’s office added.

A representative for the Norfolk District Attorney’s office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment at the time.

Ariana was a student at Middlebury College and graduated last summer. Fellow members described her as a “sweet, smart, kind young woman who is just beginning to realize her full potential,” Morriesy told NBC10 Boston at a news conference Friday.

It was also reported, according to the publication, that her mother, Teena, was the head of the school’s parent association, and that she was a “dedicated and caring advocate for both parents and students at Milton.”
