Biography of Celso Borges
Celso Borges is a Costa Rican soccer player who was born on May 27, 1988 in San José, Costa Rica. Alexandre Guimares, a former soccer player and coach born in Brazil and raised in Costa Rica, is his father. He was born in the Costa Rican capital of San José and attended Sistema Educativo Saint Clare High School, where he also played in the school team and was taught everything he knows about soccer by Costa Rican soccer icon Don Juan Varela. His studies were often interrupted by football training and matches outside the country.

Career
- Borges made his professional debut with Saprissa on January 15, 2006, at the age of 18. He won five national titles with Saprissa.
- Tor-Kristian Karlsen, sporting director of Fredrikstad FK, revealed on 18 January 2009 that Borges had signed for them, and that he would start playing for them on 1 July 2009, when his contract with Saprissa expired. Fredrikstad subsequently agreed to pay Deportivo Saprissa 1 million kroner (€125,000) so that Borges could join the team immediately and play for Fredrikstad when the season starts on April 14, against previous league champions Stabaek. Borges indicated in March 2011 that he would leave Fredrikstad during or after the 2011 season.
- Borges left Fredrikstad FK as a free agent on 1 January 2012, signing a three-year contract with Swedish football club AIK Stockholm.
- He was given the jersey number 10, previously worn by Martin Kayongo-Mutumba.
- Borges played his debut match for AIK on 1 April 2012 against Mjällby AIF. In the next game, he scored his first goal for the club, in a win against Kalmar FF.
- Manager Andreas Alm hired him as a striker in the first part of the season. However, during the summer break, he slipped and started playing as a central midfielder, eventually becoming the team’s first choice in that position. He finished the season as the team’s top scorer.

- Borges currently holds the record for appearances in the Costa Rica national football team with 153 appearances and 27 goals. He played in more than 50 qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup, as well as in the finals of the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and 2018.
- He also appeared in the 2011 and 2013 Copa Centroamericanas, as well as the 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2019 and 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cups.
- Borges competed at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru, where he scored a goal and was considered one of the best performers of the tournament. After the competition, he was named as one of the 10 players to watch in the future. Borges also competed at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup, which was held in Canada.
- He made his debut for the senior team against Grenada in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in June 2008 and scored his first international goal against Suriname in September of the same year.
- Borges helped the team to a second-place finish in the 2011 Copa Centroamericana, as well as the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup later that year, after featuring during the nation’s dismal 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
- Borges was nominated for Costa Rica’s 2014 FIFA World Cup squad in June 2014. Borges was the first of five Costa Rican players to convert a penalty in a 5–3 penalty shootout triumph against Greece in the Round of 16.
