Warning! Contains spoilers for Chainsaw Man Chapter 112!The protagonist of Chainsaw Man’s second part is quickly becoming the series’ new Makima. Series author Tatsuki Fujimoto has majorly changed up the series in Part 2, featuring a new main protagonist in Asa Mitaka who is vastly different from Denji. At the same time, Mitaka’s story is deeply connected to Denji’s and the latest chapter just deepens this connection further.
Just like Denji, Asa made a contract with a Devil at the moment of her death. But unlike Denji, the War Devil contracted with her to pursue its dream rather than the other way around. Its dream is to kill Chainsaw Man, a task for which it will need an incredibly strong weapon. However, the strength of a weapon that the War Devil makes is dependent on how important to her it is. This was shown when Asa used a uniform her Mom gave her to defeat the Justice Devil. And in order to obtain a weapon like that, Asa is willing to compromise her morals, as the latest chapter shows.
In chapter 112, shaken by the fate of her friend Yuko, Asa tells the War Devil that she is finally willing to turn a human into a weapon to help kill Chainsaw Man. But she doesn’t want to turn an innocent person into a weapon, instead preferring to kill someone who is a bit morally bankrupt, but not a downright criminal as she still needs to make that person important to her to make the weapon strong. Denji seems to fit these criteria as she sees him grifting homeless people for some extra cash. So Asa attempts to get closer to Chainsaw Man himself by asking him out on a date at the end of the chapter, to which he readily agrees.
Asa Is Trying To Manipulate Denji Just Like Makima Did
While this is all treated somewhat comedically, this moment is very reminiscent of Makima’s manipulation of Denji in part 1. Makima also wanted to use Denji as a weapon, albeit not literally, and used romance to achieve this outcome. And this manipulation was so effective that even at the end of Part 1, after Makima’s plan led to the deaths of everyone he cared about, Denji still said that he loved Makima. While it seems like Asa’s manipulative skills are much more awkward than Makima’s, given how weak Denji is to this sort of thing he likely will still fall for her ploy.
While Chainsaw Man part 1 was from Denji’s perspective, part 2 has largely been focused around Asa’s viewpoint. This means that fans will essentially get to relive Makima’s manipulation of Denji from the perspective of the manipulator instead of the manipulated. This adds a whole new layer to Chainsaw Man Part 2’s already incredibly rich plot and ties it even closer to the best aspect of the first part.
