Wilson welcomed her first child, daughter Sarina, on August 2, 1993.
Sarina chose a creative path for her career, but a little different from her mother’s. She graduated from California State University Northridge in June 2021, sharing on Instagram that it took her nine years to finish because she changed her major. Sarina began studying English and creative writing before finally devoting herself to writing scripts for cinema and television.
Her graduation was also delayed due to health issues. When Sarina was 16, she thought she was suffering from food poisoning after going out with her friends, but the symptoms did not go away.
Wilson told PEOPLE in 2017, “She would have these horrible bouts of vomiting and stabbing pains in her stomach. I thought, ‘This was crazy.’ There was something wrong with my daughter and no one could tell me what it was.”
After feeling “scared, frustrated and depressed” for almost a year, Sarina was diagnosed with mitochondrial dysfunction and cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS).

When Sarina was younger, Wilson took on the responsibility of getting answers about her daughter’s illness.
“I’m the one in the hospital. “Dad makes sure people go to school,” Wilson said Parade. “So we’re a family that’s used to saying, ‘Oh, okay, we’re doing it now,’ and just being open to the flexibility of it all.”
She added: “But ultimately you make the decision: ‘Are we a family, aren’t we?’ So if we are, let’s join in and do what we need to do.”
Sarina continued to be honest about her health problems. In September 2023, she opened up on social networks about her experience with appendicitis.
In the midst of recovering from an appendectomy, Sarina paid tribute to her mother, writing: “But the person I have to thank in this post who does so much but I feel like I’ll never make it up to her is my mother. 16 years with this disease and she has been my rock, my lawyer, my mother, my unintentional punching bag, my world, my life.”
Wilson’s oldest child also documents her creative pursuits on social media, including her artwork and writing. Sarina also has an Instagram account dedicated to her comics.
