Chandrabose is an Indian lyricist and playback singer who works mainly in Telugu films. He rose to fame with the song “Naatu Naatu” from the Telugu period action film RRR (2022), for which he won a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award in 2023.

Kanukuntla Subhash Chandrabose was born on Sunday, May 10, 1970 (53 years old; as of 2023) in Challagariga, Warangal District, Telangana (now in Jayashankarbhupalpalli District, Telangana). His zodiac sign is Taurus. There is a Shiva temple and a library near his home in Chalgariga. Chandrabose spent his childhood listening to devotional songs, which started playing at 4 am every day. He also listens to the radio. Soon, he memorized the songs and often sang along. He was a voracious reader and often went to the library after school to browse different books. He grew up listening to folk music and started writing songs at the age of 11. In an interview, he said of his childhood,
I grew up in a village in Warangal district, surrounded by folk music and Potana’s Bhagavatam and Annamaya Kritis. I really enjoyed reading children’s magazines at the time, which broadened my imagination. My sense of music comes from oral traditions like hari katha, burra katha, yakshaganas and Chindu Bhagavatam. I would write it, sing it and further refine it. “
He pursued his Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from JN Government Polytechnic Ramanthapur, Hyderabad. Thereafter, he studied at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, where he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree in the same subject. He entered the industry with the ambition of becoming a playback singer. While pursuing engineering, he tried his hand at being a singer on the Doordarshan channel but failed. Thereafter, his friend Srinathana advised him to focus on writing instead of singing.

Parents and siblings
His father, Narsaiah, was a primary school teacher. He is the youngest of four siblings, two brothers, Rajad and Koti, and a sister, Swarupa. His mother, Kankuntla Madhunamma, worked as a coolie in the fields because it was difficult to support the family on her father’s wages. She died of a heart attack in 2019.

On March 7, 1999, Chandra Bose married Suchitra, a choreographer from the Telugu film industry, in Bhadrachalam, Andhra Pradesh. The two first met on a flight from Chennai to Hyderabad in 1998. Initially, they faced difficulties in convincing their parents to get married as Suchitra was older than Chandra Bose and they belonged to different castes. Suchitra belonged to a Brahmin family while Chandra Bose belonged to a backward class family. They have two children, a son Nanda Vanamali and a daughter Amrutha.
Profession
In a career spanning over 25 years, Chandrabose has composed over 3,600 songs for over 850 films, setting a record in the Telugu film industry. He entered the Telugu film industry with Muppalaneni Shiva’s film Taj Mahal (1995). The first song he composed for the film with the assistance of MM Srilekha was Manchu kondallona Chandram. The song received huge appreciation and established Chandra Bose’s reputation in the industry. In 2001, he composed three songs that attracted the masses: Chai Chatukkuna Tagara Bhai for Mrugaraju, Evaremi Anukunna for Budget Padmanabham and Ekkado Putti Ekkado Perigi for Student No.1. Ekkado Putti Ekkado Perigi’s collaboration with NTR Jr brought him into the limelight. He collaborated with AR Rahman on Naani’s hit Telugu song Pedave Palikina (2004).
His notable works include Mounamgane Edagamani in Autograph (2004), Namasthe Namasthe Neeku Namasthe in Samba (2004), Panchadhara Bomma Bomma in Magadheera (2009) and Kani Penchina Maa Ammake in Manam (2014). In 2018, he became popular with Rangasthalam, the soundtrack of the 2018 Telugu film of the same name. Some of the hit songs from the soundtrack include Jigelu Rani, Entha Sakkagunnave and Ee Sethithone. He composed the popular songs “Ooh antava” and “Srivalli” for the film Pushpa – Therise (2021).
In 2022, he rose to fame for composing the lyrics of the song “Naatu Naatu” from the movie “RRR”, which went on to win numerous awards including the Academy Award and the Golden Globe.
In January 2023, Naatu Naatu won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. Naatu Naatu beat out Taylor Swift nominees Carolina, Lady Gaga, BloodPop and Benjamin Rice’s “Hold My Hand” as well as Tems, Rihanna, Ryan Ku Ryan Coogler and Ludwig Goransson’s “Lift Me Up” was nominated. On March 12, 2023, Naatu Naatu defeated heavyweight competitors such as Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick, Rihanna’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” won Oscars for “Lift Me Up” and “This Is All Life.” Instantly everywhere, Tell Like a Woman received applause.
